Info about me:

So who are you, anyway?

You can call me gray, or techtemper, or whatever, I don't really care. I go by many names. I'm interested in computers, music, graphic/web design, photography/videography, automotive stuff, and East Asian (mostly Japanese) internet culture. I will not give out a bunch of personally identifiable information about myself because, though most people don't care about their privacy online anymore, I still do.

Where are your socials? You're like off the grid bro

See Why I Will Never Again Use Social Media (WIP).

What are your specs/OS/setup/etc.?

See gearpage1 and gearpage2.

How can I contact you?

Email me at gdp770@proton.me. I'll usually respond within a few hours.

Can I donate/subscribe/pay you?

Not currently.

Info about the site:

What's the reason behind making this website?

There are several reasons, actually.

The first is that it's just a good idea to have one in general. I believe that everyone who uses the internet should have a website, no matter what you're doing. There's something powerful about being able to do basically whatever you want and lay it out however you want. Your motivation and ability are really the limit. Of course, the ideal is to self-host the site, which I will do eventually, but for now Neocities is an alright option because I'm still doing everything manually so the only real differences are the backend and the URL, and I can port over the HTML and CSS easily once I start self-hosting. (Don't worry, I'll keep this site up with a link to the new one when I decide to port it over.) I deleted all of my social media a long time ago, except for Youtube, Twitch, and Steam, if those even count as social media. I'll make an article going into specifics about why I did that but the reason relevant here is that I always felt uneasy and restricted using social media. Always playing by someone else's rules, always drawing within someone else's lines, an ever-present threat of unwanted changes, or something you make being removed. It felt so clinical and impersonal, so corporate. I don't want to compete for likes. I don't want to deal with algorithms. My hope with this site is that, even just for the brief period you visit, It'll help to make the internet feel a little bit more like it used to be a long time ago, as well as share a little bit about myself and what i'm thinking and doing. Hey, maybe you'll learn something.

The second is that I spend a lot of time on the internet and do a lot of things. This means that I need a central hub to which I can connect all of it. Unfortunately, most websites only allow you to link to a few other places on your profile, if they even allow links at all. I found it very annoying having to pick and choose which sites to share on my profile in one place and which sites to put on another. Now I can just link everything here, and visitors such as yourself can decide which, if any, of what I have to offer on the home page interests you.

The third is that I needed a place to share my thoughts. You already should know why I don't want to use traditional social media for this. Occasionally I would write out several page long rants in chatrooms that have a few friends in them, but those services won't last forever and only a few people can even see what I have written. I needed an easy-to-navigate place where I can write things, categorize them, they won't get deleted or buried under other text and I can hotlink to them if need be.

Why "4200rpm"? Is that a car thing?

No, it isn't. I wanted a name that wasn't taken already, and that would be short and somewhat memorable but I didn't want to pick one of the names I chose for other purposes, because that would imply that the site is strictly about technology, or music, or anime, etc. 4200rpm is the revolutions per minute (speed) of the hard drive in the first computer I ever owned. I may start posting things about cars someday however.

Can you optimize for mobile devices?

No. Check the "Enable desktop site" or "Request desktop site" box. It will make it look better.

Do you have an RSS feed?

Kinda. Neocities automatically generates one but I have yet to configure it properly, it'll be available soon(tm).

Do you really need all these anime girls all over the site?

Yes.
